Black Girl Hair Series

The story of a series celebrating my hair, and the hair of fellow Black women

Growing up in rural Florida, I didn't see many people who looked like me.

I grew to feel that my natural curls weren't beautiful.

I got chemical relaxers and forced my hair straight religiously throughout starting in middle school. Eventually, I got tired of the work.

I became tired of the damage to my hair, the constant straightening, the shame I felt more my natural curls.

Thank God for the Natural Hair Movement of the 2010's. I stopped getting relaxers, embraced my hair, and started the healing journey.

I had to heal my hair and my self esteem.

Black and Brown women gave the Natural Hair Movement new life in the form of Youtube videos, online forums, and chats. We shared with each other ways to take care of and maintain naturally curly hair, healing both the damage from relaxed hair AND the internal racism from hating our own hair.
